Routine Cleanings
It is very important for your oral health and even your overall health to have regular hygiene appointments with our dental hygienist. Dental cleanings are the only way to remove tartar or hard deposits from your teeth, which helps to prevent gum disease.
When your hygienist polishes your teeth it not only makes them look and feel better, it smoothes and polishes tooth surfaces so they are less likely to accumulate plaque.
Gum disease begins with plaque, a clear and sticky layer that contains germs (or bacteria). It forms on your teeth every day. If plaque is not removed every day by brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (also called calculus). In the early stages, gum disease is called “gingivitis”. Signs of gingivitis are red or bleeding gums. If the gum disease progresses it will begin to destroy the attachment and pockets will develop in the gums surrounding the teeth. This is called “periodontitis” Your gums may be puffy and may bleed without having any pain. If gum disease is not treated, infections can develop; teeth will loosen and eventually need to be pulled.
The good news is that gum disease is completely preventable and even treatable in the earlier stages. The best way to deal with gum disease is not to get it in the first place. To protect your oral health, brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once a day and see your dentist and dental hygienist regularly.
When gum disease is more serious, your dentist may refer you to a dental specialist called a periodontist.
